Doula Bio - Ashley Smith

Hi, my name is Ashley Smith and I live just outside of Ashland on a horse farm. I came to this area originally to go to Northland College, where my interest in doula work began. I learned about the medicalization of childbirth and the ways in which women were made to feel disempowered about themselves and their birth experience. I chose to do my senior thesis through interview based research and find out if a sample of women in this community had positive birth experiences with the support of a doula. My research indicated that all of the women I interviewed felt they had a positive experience! The research was encouraging to me and also sparked my interest in becoming a nurse midwife someday! Currently, I am awaiting a spot in the nursing program and working for Regional Hospice as a CNA and volunteer coordinator. I look forward to meeting you!
